Echocardiographic reference ranges for sedated healthy peccaries ( Tayassu tajacu, Linnaeus , 1758 ) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Moura,L.S.; Rodrigues,R.P.S.; Silva,A.B.S.; Pessoa,G.T.; Sousa,F.C.A.; Barbosa,M.A.P.S.; Souza,A.B.; Alves,J.J.R.P.; Macedo,K.V.; Diniz,A.N.; Silva,E.G.; Araújo,J.R.; Marques,D.C.; Cavalcante-Filho,M.F.; Alves,F.R..
ABSTRACT Peccaries are wild mammals belonging to the Tayassu genus that are found almost everywhere in the Americas and have demonstrated great potential as an experimental model for scientific investigations. Twelve healthy adult animals were sedated to perform echocardiographic examinations in B, M and Doppler mode. The variables that exhibited statistically significant correlation coefficients with weight were LVFWd, LVIDd, LVIDs, E wave, A’RV, MAM, and TAPSE. The HR exhibited a negative relationship with the IVRT. The LA variable showed a positive correlation with the AO. The MAM exhibited correlations with the LVIDd and LVIDs. The TAPSE showed positive correlations with the E’RV and A’RV. The present study provides the first reference values for...

Effect of pregnancy and correlation of weight and heart rate with electrocardiographic parameters in the American Miniature Horse Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Santarosa,B.P.; Lourenço,M.L.G.; Dantas,G.N.; Ulian,C.M.V.; Heckler,M.C.T.; Sudano,M.J.; Gonçalves,R.C.; Chiacchio,S.B..
ABSTRACT There are studies on electrocardiogram (ECG) in several breeds of horses, which highlights the growing importance of cardiology in this species. But few authors have addressed the influence of pregnancy on the cardiac physiology of the mare, and specifically, there are no studies on the Mini-horse breed, as well as no correlation of body weight (BW) and heart rate (HR) with electrocardiographic parameters in this breed. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of pregnancy on ECG parameters and to examine the relationships between these variables and body weight (BW) and heart rate (HR). A total of 203 animals were used, including 143 females (66 pregnant) and 60 males. Electrocardiographic examinations were performed by computerized...

Efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing psychiatric symptoms in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillator: an integrative review BJMBR
Maia,A.C.C.O.; Braga,A.A.; Soares-Filho,G.; Pereira,V.; Nardi,A.E.; Silva,A.C..
This article is a systematic review of the available literature on the benefits that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) offers patients with implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and confirms its effectiveness. After receiving the device, some patients fear that it will malfunction, or they remain in a constant state of tension due to sudden electrical discharges and develop symptoms of anxiety and depression. A search with the key words “anxiety”, “depression”, “implantable cardioverter”, “cognitive behavioral therapy” and “psychotherapy” was carried out. The search was conducted in early January 2013. Sources for the search were ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed, and PsycINFO. A total of 224 articles were retrieved: 155 from PubMed, 69 from ISI Web of...

Heart rate variability and arrhythmias evaluated with Holter in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.S.; Muzzi,R.A.L.; Araújo,R.B.; Muzzi,L.A.L.; Ferreira,D.F.; Silva,E.F..
Cardiac diseases promote alterations in the autonomic control of the heart, leading to an increase in heart rate and, as a result, a decrease in heart rate variability (HRV).The aim of this study was to evaluate if the development of heart failure secondary to degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) concurs with changes in autonomic modulation of heart rhythm which are assessed by long electrocardiography examination (Holter). Dogs were evaluated by clinical examination and echocardiography in order to be categorized into the following groups: Control (healthy; n=6), DMVD (disease without heart failure; n=8), and DMVD heart failure (disease with heart failure; n=13). Arrhythmias and frequency domain HRV were determined by Holter. Diseased animals, when...

Use of focus assessed transthoracic echocardiography (FATE) in the veterinary emergency room Ciência Rural
Lucina,Stephany Buba; Sarraff-Lopes,Ana Paula; Sousa,Marlos Gonçalves.
ABSTRACT: The use of bedside focus assessed transthoracic echocardiography (FATE) is widespread in human medicine, and the potential for veterinary medicine has only recently been investigated. Focused echocardiographic examination can be beneficial in critically ill patients compared to other bedside diagnostic methods, as well as facilitating rapid therapeutic approaches in the emergency room. The aim of this review is to discuss FATE and identify its main applications in veterinary medicine. In this context, FATE has proved to be benefical even when carried out by a non-cardiologist physician or veterinarian. However, a few references on this subject exist in the veterinary literature and there is still a need for standardization of this technique for...
